UPM Research and Technology Carnival Launches Food Security Blueprint
UPM, June 20, 2024 – The recent carnival focused on sharing research findings and the latest technologies in modern agriculture was highlighted by the launch of UPM's Food Security Blueprint. This blueprint is expected to become a crucial reference for various stakeholders in realizing national self-sufficiency, aiming to enhance food security in Malaysia and reduce reliance on food imports, which currently stand at RM75 billion annually.
During the carnival, Dato’ Prof. Dr. Ahmad Farhan Ahmad Sadullah, Vice-Chancellor of UPM, emphasized that the purpose of the event was to establish UPM as a leading institution among public higher education institutions (IPTAs) in supporting national food security. He stressed that achieving this goal requires the synergy of all parties, with UPM playing a pivotal role in driving this initiative.
The launch of the Food Security Blueprint represents a significant step in supporting the "PUTRA: Agriculture for the People" initiative, which was inaugurated by His Royal Highness Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor on May 16. The blueprint outlines practical strategies and measures to enhance local food production and advance more efficient and competitive agricultural technologies.
Aligned with UPM's ‘true north’ framework, “Knowledge and Service,” the university is committed to leading efforts to ensure that the culture of food security is realized in the country in the near future. UPM will continue to conduct research and innovation that supports the agricultural sector, with the aim of contributing to the success and prosperity of the nation.
The carnival also featured exhibitions of agricultural technology innovations, knowledge-sharing sessions, and collaborations among researchers, industry practitioners, and the community. With the launch of the Food Security Blueprint, UPM hopes to further solidify its role as a center of excellence in research and development in the agricultural sector, thereby supporting the government's efforts to achieve food autonomy and enhance the well-being of Malaysians.
