FROM CAMPUS TO COMMUNITY: SULUNG 1.0 OUTSTANDING STUDENT CAMP

Author: Nurul Farhan Zainorkamarul Basahidin

Jerantut, 3 August 2025 – A total of eight students from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) participated in the SULUNG 1.0 Outstanding Student Camp, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). The four-day programme took place from 31 July to 3 August 2025 in Kampung Bantal, Jerantut, Pahang.

The camp involved the participation of 53 SULUNG 1.0 students from eight Public Universities (UA) across the country. It was a continuation of the SULUNG Identity Camp held in November 2024 in Janda Baik. The main objective of the programme was to empower students from B40 families by strengthening their identity, character, leadership, and volunteerism.

Throughout the programme, various activities were conducted focusing on character development and social awareness. Key activities included community service projects and engagement with residents through visits to Kampung Bantal and Kampung Gusai. Through these activities, students not only learned to work in teams, but were also exposed to real issues faced by rural communities such as poverty, limited access to basic facilities, and educational inequality.

The programme also provided students with opportunities to build social networks across universities, share aspirations and life experiences, and foster a spirit of unity and empathy. Activities were carried out in a peaceful village setting, far removed from campus comfort, leaving a lasting impact on the students’ personal growth and values.

This programme is expected to continue nurturing leadership and volunteerism among SULUNG students and serve as a platform for shaping a more compassionate and competitive generation of undergraduates. UPM remains committed to supporting student involvement in such initiatives, in line with the university’s mission to produce holistic graduates who excel academically and are socially responsible. Such exposure is believed to be crucial in shaping future leaders with integrity and a heart for the people.
