THE IMPORTANCE OF SOFT SKILLS AMONG STUDENTS IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

By: Zulkifli Ibrahim

Soft skills are increasingly emphasised in the higher education system in line with the growing complexity and competitiveness of the modern job market. Students in higher education institutions (HEIs) are not only required to master academic knowledge in their respective fields, but also to develop additional competencies such as effective communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. These elements complement the technical knowledge acquired in the classroom, ultimately producing more balanced and holistic graduates.

In the context of learning in HEIs, soft skills are commonly developed through co-curricular activities, student leadership programmes, and participation in student organisations. Through such involvement, students have the opportunity to enhance their interpersonal skills and build self-confidence when dealing with various situations. In addition, working in teams helps students understand the importance of tolerance, responsibility, and mature conflict management.

Technological advancement and changes in the employment landscape also require students to be more flexible and adaptable. Employers today do not only focus on academic achievement but also evaluate a candidate’s ability to adapt to a dynamic working environment. Therefore, HEI students need to take full advantage of available opportunities to develop themselves comprehensively in order to be better prepared for future challenges after graduation.

However, there are challenges in strengthening soft skills among students. These include an over-reliance on theoretical learning, limited participation in extracurricular activities, and time constraints due to heavy academic workloads. Hence, higher education institutions must play a more proactive role in providing suitable platforms to continuously encourage the development of these skills.

In conclusion, soft skills are a crucial element that should not be overlooked in the higher education system. The combination of academic knowledge and soft skills can produce graduates who are not only excellent in their field of study but also competitive at the global level. Therefore, continuous efforts must be made by all parties, including students, lecturers, and institutions, to ensure the development of high quality and well balanced human capital.
