STUDENT EMPOWERMENT THROUGH AUKU

Author:Wan Fatin Fashilin binti Wan Adeli

Student empowerment is a crucial aspect of national development, particularly in producing students who are responsible, knowledgeable, and skilled in various fields. One way used to empower students is through the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU). AUKU is seen as a law that provides space for students to engage in various social, political, and welfare activities, but at the same time, it also controls these activities so that they do not interfere with their primary focus as students.

Introduction to AUKU

The Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) 1971 was first drafted to regulate the behavior and activities of students in public universities and colleges in Malaysia. AUKU aims to ensure that students focus their attention on learning and self-development within the academic environment, in addition to controlling external influences that could threaten the social and political stability of the country.

The Universities and University Colleges (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted on June 27, 2024 and came into force on October 1, 2024.

The Role of AUKU in Student Empowerment

AUKU has created opportunities for students to develop their leadership and social skills. Universities provide platforms for students participate in student organizations that can help them develop themselves. These activities allow students to build organizational, leadership, and teamwork skills that are crucial for their future careers.

In addition, AUKU can also encourage students to become more responsible. In some cases, students are given the opportunity to lead student associations, clubs, or organizations on campus. This can nurture leadership potential and build self-confidence that is much needed in their daily lives.

Overall, AUKU plays an important role in student empowerment in this country. Although there are certain limitations that may be seen as obstacles, AUKU also helps to control the stability of universities and the country. However, there needs to be a balance between controlling student activities and providing space for them to develop holistically as knowledgeable, skilled, and responsible individuals. Student empowerment through AUKU, with appropriate improvements, can bring great benefits to the younger generation who will become future leaders of the country.
