STUDENT DISCIPLINARY PUNISHMENT: PUNISHING OR EDUCATING?

Author: Wan Fatin Fashilin Binti Wan Adeli

Disciplinary punishments are one way to ensure that students comply with the rules and ethics set by the university. However, in addition to punitive measures, disciplinary action should also be seen as a form of educational tool that aims at shaping students into more responsible and disciplined individuals.

At Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), if a student is found guilty of a disciplinary offense, the Student Disciplinary Committee may impose on the student any one or any combination of two or more appropriate penalties under Rules 58(1) and (2) of the Universities and University Colleges (Universiti Putra Malaysia) (Discipline of Students) Rules 2024. Among the penalties that may be imposed are warnings, performing community service activities, fines not exceeding RM500, prohibition from being on campus, eviction or prohibition from residing in dormitories, suspension from examinations, suspension of study semesters, and expulsion from the University.

Generally, the purpose of disciplinary action is to maintain discipline thus helping to create a conducive and organized learning experience. Furthermore, appropriate penalties can help students understand the consequences of their actions and develop a responsible character. Lastly, it aims to deter misconduct, serving as a lesson to other students to avoid repeating the same offenses.

In the context of education, disciplinary action should be constructive. Punishments need to be carefully planned to provide lessons for students. For example, through the implementation of community service punishments. Furthermore, punishments must be imposed fairly and consistently, without favoritism. Additionally, the Student Disciplinary Committee must understand the student's background and circumstances before imposing punishment. Finally, students should be given the opportunity to rectify their mistakes and learn from the experience.

In conclusion, disciplinary punishments are not merely about punishment, but rather about educating and guiding students to become responsible and disciplined individuals. This approach is crucial in shaping students who are mature and prepared to face future challenges.
