CYBERBULLYING: THE SILENT THREAT IN THE DIGITAL REALM

The contemporary digital world has opened vast, borderless channels for communication and social engagement. However, within the zealous embrace of this online sphere, a dangerous and growing concern has taken root — cyberbullying. In stark contrast to physical bullying, typically confined to schools or public areas, cyberbullying remains hidden behind screens, able to persist 24/7. It's a silent threat that profoundly impacts the mental and emotional well-being of its victims.

The Definition and Forms of Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying refers to any act of degradation, intimidation, dissemination of personal shame, and harassment perpetrated through digital mediums such as social media, instant messaging applications, email, or websites. Frequently encountered forms of cyberbullying include sending abusive and condemnatory messages on social media, circulating private images without consent, engaging in defamation or spreading false narratives, initiating online social exclusion, and assuming another person's identity.

Impact on Victims

The profound impact of cyberbullying can severely compromise mental health and academic achievement. Victims often face emotional distress, depression, and anxiety, sometimes leading to self-harm or suicidal attempts in extreme cases. Studies show that adolescents and university students subjected to cyberbullying are inclined to withdraw socially, suffer from sleep disorders, and experience a reduction in self-confidence.
Cyberbullying is no trivial matter. It represents a bitter reality demanding serious attention from all stakeholders—students, lecturers, university administration, and society at large. As a responsible academic community, we are obligated to foster a healthy communication culture, support victims, and unequivocally reject all forms of digital media misuse. Together, let us cultivate a virtual space that is safe, ethical, and respectful of all.
