Cyberbullying Risks Higher for Suicide Attempts, Says Expert

KUALA LUMPUR: "Studies have shown that cyberbullying poses a higher risk of suicidal attempts compared to other types of bullying," said Dr. Muhammad Adil Zainal Abidin, a Public Health Medical Specialist from the Department of Community Health, Faculty of Medicine, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

He explained that unlike physical bullying, cyberbullying—such as negative comments or virtual threats that remain on social media—has a lasting impact on victims.

"All forms of bullying can disrupt a person's emotions and lead to depression, including cyberbullying.

"The anonymity of the bully and the exposure of the victim's personal information contribute to heightened emotional distress.

"For individuals with high online visibility, longer 'screen time' increases their exposure to cyberbullying," he told BH today.

Dr. Muhammad Adil also suggested that education among teenagers in schools is a key platform to raise awareness about cyberbullying.

"Introducing specific subjects or modules to increase awareness and resilience among our youth is crucial, as social media usage begins from a young age. Therefore, they need to be educated from an early stage.

"Additionally, social media users should safeguard their personal information and set privacy modes to avoid cyberbullying threats," he said.

Meanwhile, Datuk Prof Dr Mohammad Shatar Sabran, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and a social expert, stated that the presence of social media cannot be curtailed, and its use is open to all users regardless of age.

"Therefore, one measure to avoid exposure to bullying is to distance oneself from social media.

"Recognizing human vulnerability, distancing oneself from social media is a prudent step.

"Do not read or view any comments on social media if you do not have strong resilience against criticism, harassment, or negative remarks," he advised.
