AKHLAK AND ADAB : THE FOUNDATION OF HOLISTIC EDUCATION AND NATION-BUILDING

By Nik Mohamad Ridhwan Nik Nasrudin

In a world shaped by relentless globalization and technological strides, higher education institutions are often judged by academic rankings and how well their graduates perform in the job market. Yet, the deeper purpose of education goes far beyond intellect, it lies in nurturing individuals grounded in character and upright conduct.

Islam places immense weight on moral development. As revealed in Surah Al-Qalam, verse 4:

"And indeed, you (O Muhammad) are of a great moral character."

This verse upholds the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the epitome of noble character. He himself proclaimed, in a hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad:

"I was sent to perfect good character."

These words reflect the heart of the Prophetic mission to refine morality. Islamic education, then, is not merely about passing on facts. It is an all-encompassing process that shapes the mind, values, and soul. This philosophy must be more than theory in modern universities, it must guide practice. Our graduates must emerge not just learned, but also anchored in integrity, echoing the mission carried by the Prophet.

Guided by this vision, institutions of higher learning must make character development a central pillar. At Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), this commitment is seen through its Holistic Student Development framework. Here, academic growth is tightly interwoven with ethical leadership, community awareness, and personal identity. Values like honesty, responsibility, and discipline aren’t just ideals, they're lived realities, ingrained in campus culture, true to UPM’s motto: With Knowledge We Serve.

The UPM HEPA Strategic Plan reinforces this ethos, balancing academic pursuits with a focus on moral strength and self-worth. It fosters student involvement in community-building, unity-enhancing programmes, and patriotic activities, all essential markers of a well-rounded individual.

Supporting this is Jiwa Putra, designed to instill empathy, civic engagement, and national pride. The Jiwa Putra 2.0 rollout in September 2024 introduced students to leadership camps, volunteer training, and service missions. Through these, they begin to embody not only knowledge but compassion, preparing them to be thoughtful agents of change.

Educators play a pivotal role in this journey. More than instructors, they are moral and spiritual guides. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) once said:

"The best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." (Hadith narrated by Bukhari)

This hadith highlights the ethical weight educators carry. When lecturers model integrity and humility, they inspire students in ways that lectures alone cannot. Throughout Islamic history, figures like Caliph Abu Bakr As-Siddiq stood for honesty, while Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab embodied strength tempered with compassion. In more recent times, scholars like Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi and Sheikh Dr Wahbah Al-Zuhaili showcased the harmony of deep knowledge and humility.

Ultimately, though, shaping one’s character is a personal journey. Institutions and teachers can guide but students must take ownership. Real change comes from within. With clear intent and steady effort, they can rise as individuals defined by intellect and virtue. It’s important for students to realise that academic achievement means little without good conduct. Simple acts like being respectful in class, arriving on time, avoiding distractions, and maintaining humility speak volumes. Knowledge without humility brings no true benefit. But when learning is paired with modesty, it unlocks deeper insight and wisdom.

In closing, the development of character and conduct is not a side note in higher education, it’s essential. True success lies in producing graduates who shine not just in grades, but in values. This vision requires commitment across the board, especially from the students themselves. With determination, they can rise to be tomorrow’s leaders. intelligent, ethical, and dedicated to the betterment of faith, nation, and the broader human community.
