ADAB AND KNOWLEDGE : THE BASIS OF STUDENT EXCELLENCE

By: Dr Aiza Shaliha Jamaluddin

In the world of higher education, students often compete to master knowledge as preparation for future career challenges. However, a question arises that deserves reflection: should the mastery of knowledge be prioritized before manners, or should manners come before knowledge? Both are crucial, but manners form the foundation that ensures knowledge is applied ethically and with integrity.

For students, manners are not limited to polite behavior, but also encompass respect towards lecturers, classmates, university staff, as well as adherence to campus rules. Without manners, outstanding academic achievements may lose their value if attitudes and behavior do not reflect good character. As Imam Malik once emphasized, learning manners takes precedence because it guides us to practice knowledge wisely.

Knowledge, on the other hand, equips students to understand their field of study, overcome academic challenges, and contribute to the development of society. Yet, knowledge without manners is like technology without control prone to misuse. Many failures and conflicts throughout history stemmed from moral decline rather than a lack of knowledge.

At the university, lecturers are not merely conveyors of knowledge but also mentors who help shape students’ character. Good manners foster a positive learning environment, thereby making the acquisition of knowledge easier.

In conclusion, manners should come first as they serve as a guide for applying knowledge responsibly. Manners and knowledge must go hand in hand, but without manners, knowledge risks becoming meaningless. As the saying goes, “Knowledge without manners is like a tree that bears no fruit.”
