SOCIAL MEDIA AND STUDENTS: BETWEEN BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

By: Zulkifli Ibrahim

Social media has become a part of students’ daily routines. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are not only spaces for social interaction but also vast sources of knowledge. Students can follow online courses, share notes or learning materials, and engage in academic discussions with classmates. Wise use of social media helps improve communication skills, creativity, and critical thinking, while also providing opportunities to build professional networks from an early stage.

However, excessive use of social media can have negative effects. Distractions, procrastination, and poor sleep quality are often linked to spending too much time on digital platforms. Entertainment content or peer pressure can also influence students’ social behavior and personal values. Without proper time management, academic performance and emotional well-being can be affected.

To balance these benefits and challenges, students need to use social media in a controlled manner. Setting daily time limits, prioritizing use for learning, and maintaining a balance between entertainment and academics are key strategies. Educational institutions can also support students through digital literacy programs that teach ethical and productive social media use.

In conclusion, social media is a powerful tool in shaping student behavior. Smart and controlled use can support academic achievement and personal development, while excessive misuse can create academic and social challenges. With awareness and proper management, students can fully harness the potential of this technology.
